Exterior Preventative Services
Most of the pests that invade your home are those that come from outside of home. Many of our customers enjoy our exterior program because it does not require the home owner to be present at the time of the service. A Unique professional would come to your home a minimum of 3 times per year and would make a thorough inspection of the outside of your home and provide a written report of their findings and recommendations to eliminate conductive conditions that create an attractive environment for pests. Unique Pest and Lawn Solutions would place a barrier around the structure of your home protecting it from invading pests.
This service can also be tailored to include rodents and decrease the number of times a professional is needed at your home.
The Barrier treatment is appropriate for those wanting only a single application service that discourages outside invaders from entering a home. We provide a barrier 5-7 feet around the foundation of the property. In addition, a trained Unique technician will leave a detailed report suggestion additional ways that can insure the success of the exterior barrier treatment.
Pests We Treat:
The house mouse is the most common pest in and around human living and working places. They damage and destroy materials by gnawing, eating your food (especially cereal products or nuts), attacking decorations such as floral or harvest/grain" arrangements. Mice can spread more than 20 kinds of organisms that can cause diseases of humans and pets. These include a variety of food poisoning bacteria like Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli, and others; tapeworms, mites, ticks, and rickettsial pox. Other rodents, which are widespread and may also come indoors for the winter such as deer mice and white-footed mice which can carry and spread other disease organisms like Hantavirus, plague and Lyme Disease.
Rats are a nuisance species for many reasons. The first complaint that most people have is due to the noise they cause scurrying about and scratching inside the home. Many people don't call to have their rat problem solved until the rats break into the home proper and start to chew on and contaminate food items in the house. However, if you've got rats in the attic or walls, they are causing many problems. First of all, rats chew and gnaw all of the time to wear down their rodent teeth. They often chew on electrical wires, creating a potential for shorts or fire hazards. They also leave a lot of feces and urine, and can contaminate a home. Rats carry a variety of diseases, such as Rat-bite fever, Rickettsia virus, Hantavirus, Eosinophilic Meningitis. The droppings of rats can cause Leptospirosis or Salmonellosis.
Hornet wasps are social insects and live in colonies. Hornet wasp colonies contain three castes: workers, males, and queens. Hornet nest are most often found attached to a bush, tree, or the side of a building. They may also be found in hollow walls, attics, and barns. The color of a hornet nest is typically brownish, differing from the gray color of paper wasp and yellow jacket nests. Hornet wasps have a lance-like stinger and can sting repeatedly. The sting of a hornet wasp can be very painful, and may even be fatal to particularly sensitive individuals. If reaction to a wasp sting seems unusual or severe in any way, you should contact a physician.
Yellow jackets are social wasps living in colonies containing workers, queens and males. An excellent time to set out apple juice traps is in March, April, and May, when queens first emerge from overwintering During this period, for every queen that is trapped and killed, it means that there will be five hundred to five thousand fewer Yellow Jackets workers in the area. In late April through September, the workers that search out and bring back food to the ever growing colony- crawling over food, threatening guests, and innocent picknickers. So trap, trap and trap as many Yellow Jackets as you possibly can. For every Yellow Jacket worker that is eradicated, there will be 20 less wasps later. During October, it is again an excellent time to eradicate queens using apple juice traps and pheromone traps. Remember, no matter how successful we may be in trapping Yellow Jackets, we cannot eliminate them all. We can however, bring their numbers down to tolerable levels.
Bees and wasps are a nuisance and a health threat to many unsuspecting individuals. These pests are notorious for building nests on and within structures that provide ideal nesting areas. They can be inside walls, under siding, and can enter through openings or cracks that appear in the exterior of your home. Bees may also find a home in the ground outside in your garden or in your lawn, and may be easily disturbed by your regular activity in the area. You should be on the lookout for increased bee and wasp sightings in areas around your home. While this does not guarantee that there is a nest in your home it does raise the likelihood of a near by bees nest. In some instances we may recommend treating the roof, fascias, soffit, and outside of chimneys using our power sprayers to prevent nesting. This will manage infestations of those pesky invaders during their early stages of development. The Wasp Prevention Program is guaranteed for the season.

Even with all the proper precautions, it is impossible to be 100% protected from mosquito borne disease. However, taking preventative measures, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, and knowing early symptoms of insect borne illness can go a long way in protecting your family, friends, and pets.
Disease-infected ticks can also be a major health concern, as they can carry deadly diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The spread of Lyme disease in recent years has also added to the dangers of tick borne disease. Our barrier spray eliminates mature ticks on contact; however let us know if any of the following apply to your family or property. We can offer additional tick prevention services for higher risk areas:
Your yard is adjacent to woods, fields or tall grasses.
Your yard has a wall fence.
You or someone in the family are frequent gardeners.
Your children enjoy playing in or near fields, trees or tall grass.
You have a lot of trees, shrubbery or dense groundcover plantings on your property.
You have a brush, wood, leaf litter, or a compost pile on or near your yard.
You have pets that love the outdoors.
Termite colonies can be extremely large and well organized; they always seem to find a way inside your home regardless of the type of construction. What’s more is that termites and carpenter ants are often eating away at the structure of your home without you knowing. To treat them, a liquid treatment is directed at the exact spots where termites and carpenter ants are most active. Liquid treatments are applied to critical entry points, such as in concrete cracks or around plumbing pipes. Liquid treatments may also be applied below grade some 18 to 24 inches deep, directly around the perimeter of your home. A liquid treatment creates an effective barrier protecting your home against future attacks.
Ants (pavement ants, house ants, little ants)- Many different species of ants populate this area and these insects can make home owners extremely frustrated because of the size of the populations that feed, forage /trail and harbor around home sites. Landscaping materials such as mulch, stones and wood members create ideal harborage points for many species of ants. Unbeknownst to many homeowners and landscapers many plants need and attract these ants closer to the home. Moisture points in and around homes will create an ideal site for ants to nest. These populations can grow very rapidly so let our trained professionals control the ant populations in and around your home quickly and effectively without putting you, your home or your family at risk.
Carpenter ants are the most frequently disturbing pests for property owners in the mid-west. Unlike termites, they do not ingest wood and quickly compromise the structure . However, they are attracted to damp moist areas and can be found in window areas, near leaks in roofs, or even under a kitchen dishwasher. They tunnel out wood leaving signs of their presence with small piles of fine sawdust or fras. Major nests are usually found outside the structure and can have thousands of ants in one nest. Satellite nests are found in and around a home or building and once disturbed can be easily moved.
