Typical 5-Step Fertilizer Schedule
- Step 1: Early Spring (March – April)
- Goal: "Wake up" the lawn and prevent weeds.
- Description: Apply a balanced fertilizer with pre-emergent weed control to stop crabgrass and other weeds from germinating as soil temperatures reach roughly
Step 2: Late Spring (May – June)
- Goal: Boost growth and combat broadleaf weeds.
- Description: Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer, often called a "weed and feed," to provide energy for the main growing season while killing active weeds like dandelions and clover.
- Step 3: Summer (June – August)
- Goal: Maintain health through heat and drought.
- Description: Use a slow-release fertilizer to provide a steady supply of nutrients without burning the grass during hot weather. Some programs include grub or insect control in this step to protect the roots.
- Step 4: Early Fall (August – September)
- Goal: Recovery and root strengthening.
- Description: Apply a balanced fertilizer to help the lawn recover from summer stress. This is often considered the most critical application for cool-season grasses to build a deep root system before winter.
- Step 5: Late Fall (October – November)
- Goal: Winter protection and early spring green-up.
- Description: Apply a "winterizer" fertilizer high in potassium to improve winter hardiness and disease resistance. This stores energy in the roots for a faster green-up next spring.
